Gir National Park, located in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, India, is the only place in the world where you can witness the majestic Asiatic lion in its natural habitat. Covering an area of approximately 1,412 square kilometers, Gir is one of India’s most famous wildlife sanctuaries and is part of the Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary. This protected area is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna, including leopards, sloth bears, hyenas, deer, wild boars, and over 300 species of birds.
Gir is globally renowned for its success in lion conservation, with a significant increase in the Asiatic lion population in recent decades. Aside from lion sightings, the park offers a variety of landscapes, from dense forests to open grasslands and rocky hills, making it a photographer’s paradise. Tour Plan
Day 1: Arrival at Gir & Check-in
- Arrival: Arrive at Rajkot or Somnath (the nearest major cities), and drive to Gir National Park (approximately 2-3 hours by road).
- Check-in: Upon arrival, check into your resort or forest lodge located near the park. Take some time to relax and enjoy the peaceful environment.
- Evening Safari: After check-in, enjoy an evening safari (usually around 3-4 PM). The evening safari provides the opportunity to spot wildlife such as leopards, deer, and, with some luck, the iconic Asiatic lion.
- Return & Dinner: After the safari, return to your resort for a relaxing dinner.
- Overnight: Stay overnight at your resort near Gir.
Day 2: Morning & Afternoon Safari in Gir
- Morning Safari: Start the day early with a morning safari (usually around 6:00 AM). Early morning is the best time to witness wildlife activity, and you may have the chance to spot the Asiatic lion or leopard along with other animals like sambar deer, chital, and wild boar.
- The Sasan Gir zone is one of the most popular safari areas known for lion sightings.
- Return & Breakfast: After the safari, return to the resort for breakfast.
- Relaxation: Spend the midday hours relaxing at the resort or exploring the nearby areas.
- Afternoon Safari: After lunch, enjoy another afternoon safari. During this safari, you may have the chance to explore different zones of the park, like the Kuno Sanctuary area or the Mendha region, which are also rich in wildlife and offer excellent photography opportunities.
- Return & Dinner: Return to the resort for dinner.
- Overnight: Stay overnight at the resort.
Day 3: Explore Gir’s Wildlife & Birdwatching
- Morning Safari: After breakfast, head out for an early morning safari to explore areas of the park that you have not yet visited. The Gir Interpretation Zone is another great area to explore for wildlife spotting and also has a visitor center for learning about the park's conservation efforts.
- Birdwatching: Gir National Park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise. After the safari, take time to observe the park's diverse birdlife, including Indian hornbills, eagles, owls, and pelicans.
- Lunch & Relax: Return to the resort for lunch and some leisure time.
- Afternoon Safari: After lunch, embark on another afternoon safari to discover more parts of the park. This safari offers opportunities to see other predators, such as hyenas and jackals, as well as various herbivores.
- Overnight: Return to the resort for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 4: Final Safari & Departure
- Morning Safari: On your final day, enjoy one last morning safari in Gir National Park. The early hours are filled with animal activity, and you might spot the Asiatic lion in its natural environment one last time.
- Breakfast: After the safari, return to the resort for breakfast and check-out.
- Drive Back to Rajkot/Somnath: Begin your journey back to Rajkot or Somnath (approximately 2-3 hours by road).
- Departure: Depending on your schedule, you can either take a flight from Rajkot or Somnath or continue to your next destination.
